The historic district of Leland, known as Fishtown, was once the fishing village on the Leland River. On this main link between Lake Leelanau and Lake Michigan, Fishtown consists of a collection of 150 year old fish shacks, weathered docks, smokehouses and commercial boats. Made up of community volunteers, the Fishtown Preservation Society, was formed in 2001 to preserve the preserving the historical and cultural heritage of Fishtown. By 2007 the society was able to purchase this section Fishtown real estate, which included two fishing boats.
Providing an authentic connection to local history, Fishtown Preservation Society ensures this historic district remains open to the public. The goal is for visitors to walk the streets and docks, examine century old structures and get a feel for the daily events on Lake Michigan's waterfront that occurred years ago.
Old Fishtown is located on a sliver of land, within minutes of Lake Michigan. The Leelanau Peninsula points northward, surrounded by the waters of Lake Michigan and the Traverse Bay. Besides Fishtown, the peninsula offers more attractions to visit, including Sleeping Bear Dunes National Seashore, Traverse City festivals, historic lighthouses and Leelanau State Park.
