West of Laramie along Route 130, Wyoming’s grass-covered prairie gives way to the Medicine Bow Routt National Forest, marked by a dramatic rise in elevation to 10,000 feet. Here in the southeast corner of the state, the Snowy Range is a magnificent mixture of splendid mountain peaks, a large collection of sparkling mountain lakes and streams, and wide open recreation spaces.
As you have already guessed by its name, the Snowy Range is well known for its winter recreation activities. Plenty of good roads spread snowmobilers, cross country skiers and downhillers throughout this national forestland. During its short summer season, back-country hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riders are usually enamored by this breathtaking alpine scenery. Bearing both a National Forest and state Scenic Byway designation, sightseers on Route 130 are easily sidetracked with the beauty of Lake Marie along the roadside. Filling the gap between Schoolhouse Rock and The Diamond, Lake Marie is a very popular stop. A short trail traces the perimeter of the lake, while another trail leads to the mountaintops. A Centennial Visitor Center map guides visitors to picnic areas, various campgrounds and miles of trails. If you don't have a snowmobile, be sure to make your plans before October as Snowy Range Pass closes early for the winter.
