The town of Bulls Bridge sprouted up just west of the Housatonic River, a few miles from the New York state line. An iron furnace, built in 1826, attracted hundreds of workers to the area. Iron ore was brought in by wagon from Clove New York and high quality pig iron was shipped out to Poughkeepsie. Not a huge surprise, the population of this sleepy little town was thought to have been greater during the 1850s than it is today.
Bulls Bridge residents began to enjoy the benefits of their new bridge in 1842. The 109 foot span linked residents to a handful of other neighboring New York State towns across the Housatonic River. The bridge (07-03-01), refurbished and beefed-up with additional reinforcement in 1969, is still used today. Its queenpost and Town lattice truss system supports a high volume of one-lane traffic. Just upstream of the bridge is the Bulls Bridge Dam and a scenic cascading waterfall, making it a popular stop for sightseers.
