Huge ledges of 300 million year old Connoquenessing sandstone, stretching across the Tygart River Valley, are responsible for a series of thundering waterfalls at the Valley Falls State Park. Taking advantage of the raw power of West Virginia's Tygart River, industrious settlers established a sawmill in 1827. By 1847, John Bradshaw and William Whitescarver established a grist mill at this site as well, selling products under The Pride of the Valley brand. Today, only a few telltale pillars are all that remain of these early Taylor County enterprises along the riverbanks.
Although swimming is forbidden in this powerful flow, paddlers make the most of this old reliable river. When other streams slow, this half mile set of falls provides a thrilling whitewater challenge.
Just a short distance from I-79, Valley Falls State Park provides recreation for landlubbers as well. Here at this day-use park, eight trails are set up for hiking and mountain biking,
ach clearly marked and signed. Throughout the mountainous setting much of the 18 mile trail system is fairly hilly. With a pleasant mix of both short and moderate trails, there's a chance for everyone to explore the West Virginia countryside. For those that love the water, riverside benches and gazebos provide a relaxing setting. After sitting by the falls for a short time the cacophonous din soon turns into a soothing white noise, drowning out everything but your own thoughts, plus a mesmerizing sight of the falls.
