One of America’s most famous pioneers, David Crockett, was also a soldier, politician and industrialist. Born in the tiny hamlet of Limestone, Tennessee, Crockett moved to Lawrence County in 1817 where he served in the militia and as justice of the peace. Here along the banks of Shoal Creek he set up a powder mill, grist mill and distillery. Unfortunately before he could realize any profit, his entire complex was washed away in a flood.
Today, the state of Tennessee recognizes this famous frontiersman at Shoal Creek by naming the Lawrence County park after David Crockett. Dedicated 1959, the 1100 acre David Crockett State Park features a historic museum, the 40 acre Lindsey Lake, an olympic-sized swimming pool, paved bike paths and six miles of hiking trails. The park's highlights include both natural and manmade features. The park's restaurant, a very popular stop for area residents, overlooks the scenic Lindsey Lake. Crockett Falls, a picturesque favorite, always entices park-goers to cool their feet in the shallow pool below the waterfall.
Vacationers may enjoy a week at the campgrounds, or "rough it" in one of the new, energy efficient and environmentally friendly cabins. Here along the scenic Shoal Creek, with overhanging limestone bluffs, park visitors may either experience a forest filled with wildlife or plenty of the park's manmade amenities. Although the covered bridge is not a historic landmark, its beautiful setting on Shoal Creek creates another example of the park's variety of facilities and attractions.
