At first glance, the Boerne City Park appears as a typical urban park, complete with sport fields, tennis courts and outdoor swimming pool. But in addition, a rare gem is located along the banks of the Cibolo Creek. Tucked away in a corner of the park visitors will find the 160 acre Cibolo Nature Center. Here a precious section of Upper Cibolo Creek, lined with huge bald cypress trees, protects the state's disappearing marshland and area wildlife. A unique conservation model offers students, young and old, a chance to study and learn from the natural world, and also helps to encourage the enjoyment of nature. This small remnant of the 10,000 acre Herff Ranch, with its roots dating back to 1852, helps teach and apply sustainable farming practices as well.
Although the Center is geared for all ages, focus is centered on education, after school programs and summertime outdoor projects. The Friends of the Cibolo Wilderness represent a grass-roots organization that was instrumental in creating this unique wildlife preserve. A total of six nature trails wind through an array of diverse habitats, including Texas prairie, marsh, woodland and river environments. Thanks to an eager group of volunteers, the Cibolo Nature Center and Farm present a carefully planned addition to the city park.
