Often considered as 360 miles of scenic perfection, Oregon's stunning coastline is dotted with dramatic beaches, peaceful coves and picturesque sea stacks, all accented with gorgeous sunsets. And without a doubt one of the most photographed lighthouse locations is found just north of Florence at Heceta Head. Here, the rugged tree covered Coastals run to the edge of the sea, creating the most marvelous seaside setting.
Along with the outstanding scenic beauty here at Devils Elbow, the mountainous coastline came with quite a few challenges during highway construction. Here at milepost 178 and the Heceta Head Lighthouse Scenic Overlook, a combination tunnel and bridge was needed to complete this section of U. S. Route 101 in 1932. Designed by Conde McCullough, the reinforced concrete bridge stretches 619 feet over the Cape Creek Gorge. The parabolic arch and adjacent two-tiered column of arch sections is viewed as an engineering masterpiece. Recognized with its addition to the National Register of Historic Places, the bridge creates one more picturesque element on this exceptional Pacific Coast Scenic Byway stop.
