California's San Onofre State Beach is found in a busy location about halfway between San Diego and Los Angeles. The 3000 acre park protects three and a half miles of the legendary Trestles Beach, 100 foot tall sandstone bluffs and rugged hills to the east. Squeezed between the San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant and Camp Pendleton, the state park also sees the speedy Pacific Surfliner, an Amtrak passenger train that moves over three million commuters every year. The Surfliner follows the Pacific coastline for most of its 350 mile journey from San Diego to San Luis Obispo.
The waves here at San Onofre come in slow and steady. The world renown surf break and classic laid-back atmosphere create a haven for novice surfers and many longboarders. San-O for short, the boundaries of the state park cover a large section of beach. Commonly broken into four sections, the Trestles, Church, Old Man’s, and Trails has attracted surfers for nearly 100 years. This surfer's go-to spot is easily accessed from I-5 and is just an hour's drive from San Diego. A little further drive from Los Angeles, there are designated campsites for both tent camping and RVs.
