Pennsylvania's U.S. Route 6 winds its way clear across the state from the Pocono Mountains in the east to Lake Erie in the west. As the byway route passes through the Northeast Mountains Region, visitors are not only treated to the scenic Endless Mountains, but introduced to the area's multi-cultural heritage. A string of coal mining towns, old lumbering camps and farming communities point to the roots of the state's industrial and agriculture leadership. And none of the area's success would have been possible without the northeast rail system, celebrated today at Steamtown National Historic Site.
   Stretching the definition of a mountain region, the Endless Mountains Region includes five of Pennsylvania's northeast counties, Bradford, Sullivan, Susquehanna, Northern Wayne and Wyoming. Part of the Allegheny Plateau, this landscape of endless rolling hills has been shaped by the North Branch of the Susquehanna and its countless tributaries. Home to a cluster of beautiful state parks, such as Worlds End, Mount Pisgah and Salt Springs, the area offers a wide world of recreation.
   From a vantage point just above the hilltops ... and serenely following the whims of wind, this small troop of balloonists looks over the North Branch of the Susquehanna River. Here along this major waterway, Native Americans enjoyed the woodland's bounty for thousands of years. Replaced by European settlers during the mid 1700s, today's network of communities owe their roots to these early pioneers. Here, the town’s people are eager to share their marvelous landscape and scenic corridors with Pennsylvania visitors. Endless Mountain tourism, beginning in the late 19th century, introduces guests to Susquehanna canoe trips, horseback riding, snow skiing, woodland trails and enticing fishing holes. Today, young vacationers look to mountain biking, snowboarding, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling for more Endless Mountain thrills.
