Scenic USA - Kansas Mushroom Rock |
Photos by Ben Prepelka Ben Prepelka Photography |
Well off the beaten track, a pair of giant mushrooms greet visitors at this Kansas state park. Located about 30 miles from Salina and seeming more like 300, the small five and a half acre Mushroom Rock State Park is found in the midst of the Kansas plains, surrounded by farmland in every directions.
Constant prairie winds, a power source for modern energy production, have created these 15 foot tall mushroom shaped sandstone sculptures. A small brook and gravel access road divides the park into two sections. The unusual shaped rocks are located on each side of the road, requiring only a short walk to see both of these geological oddities. A picnic area, hand pumped well and rest room make up the spartan amenities.
