Scenic USA - Maryland Loys Station Bridge |

Fires, progress and floods have claimed all but six of Maryland's historic covered bridges. At one time as many as 52 wooden covered bridges dotted the countryside.
This 90 foot single lane bridge on Old Frederick Road has been rescued from an arson fire and kindly rebuilt by reusing some of the original beams and other salvaged bridge material. The covered bridge uses a multiple King Post truss system and some of the charring is still visible. Loys Station Covered Bridge is one of three bridges in the Thurmont area, all utilizing a different truss design.
A small community park lies adjacent to the bridge and includes a playground, picnic area and access to the Loys Station Bridge as it crosses Owens Creek. The bridge remains as the focal point of the park thanks to the efforts of the community and the Covered Bridge Preservation Society.
