Mount Baker Scenic Byway, Route 542, winds its way along the scenic North Fork of the Nooksack River. The last 24 miles of this 57 mile byway are designated as a national forest scenic byway. Successfully garnering a scenic byway tag, this popular scenic drive attracts Seattle area visitors and metro residents. The 57 mile route eventually dead-ends at Artist Point and the Mount Baker Wilderness Area. Byway travelers really don't mind the return trip and look at it as a great way to experience all the things missed on the way up. One of the ultimate quests on this trip is capturing the photogenic Mount Shuksan. Although this view isn't from the famous Picture Lake viewpoint, this scene creates a marvelous reflective view of the majestic Cascade peak.
Towering over Baker Lodge and closing in on 10,000 feet, Mount Shuksan is one of the head turning views along the byway. Must see sights also include the swift waters of the Nooksack River, its thundering waterfalls, and the ever impressive Mt. Baker. More stunning scenes include nearby Heather Meadows, Artist Point, Austin Pass and panorama views throughout the Mount Baker Wilderness Area. A quick read of the byway's amenities list campgrounds, wilderness hiking, plenty of picnic spaces and photo opportunities in all directions. This Washington State byway experience is one that won't be forgotten.
