Still seaworthy and centerpiece of the Texas Seaport Museum, the 400 ton Elissa is the official Tall Ship of Texas. Calling Galveston her home port, the Elissa is fully equipped and treats her guests to a fine example of an 1877 barque. Built in Aberdeen, Scotland, the Elissa makes for a beautiful sight when her 19 sails, covering a half acre, are fully extended.
Thanks to the Galveston Historical Foundation and hundreds of volunteers, the Elissa received a meticulous eight year restoration. Visitors are invited to walk the decks, examine the rigging and imagine a 19th century swashbuckler’s life on the sea. Designated as one of America’s Treasures by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Elissa’s restoration process is conveyed to museum guests in a 17 minute documentary film, The Story of Elissa.
With her three masts standing nearly a hundred feet tall, the Elissa presents a stirring sight on Galveston Harbor. Boat tours, theater presentations and the learning center are all included with admission. Aside from her educational credits, here on Galveston’s waterfront the tall ship doubles as a romantic setting for weddings and receptions.
