Scenic USA - California Angel Island State Park |
Photos by Meri Cheatham |
On an exceptional clear day, Angel Island is the perfect perch to take in the wonderful view toward California's Golden Gate Strait and
Marin County. In the distant southwest you'll see one of the world's most famous icons, the Golden Gate Bridge, connecting the tip of the San Francisco Peninsula to the Sausalito headlands to the north. Just above
Sausalito, an exceptionally scenic Coastal Highway 1 begins to wind its way northward along the Pacific Ocean.
Angel Island State Park can be reached by ferry service, or by private boat. Slips and overnight mooring buoys are available. Tram tours around the island provide a look into the island's lengthy history. Deer and raccoon, the best bay swimmers, are the only large animals on the island. A wide variety of birds make this woodland habitat their home. Hiking and biking paths cover the island and lead to many historic buildings. North Ridge trail leads to the top of Angel Island, offering 360 degree views of San Francisco Bay. At the top sits
Mount Caroline Livermore, rising 788 feet. Here, visitors can view the Golden Gate Bridge, Sausalito, Alcatraz and the little town of Tiburon.
