Outlining the Delaware River for nearly 40 miles, the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area follows the border between New Jersey and Pennsylvania. At the southern end, the Gap is positioned between Mount Minsi and Mount Tammany. Famous for its dramatic S curves in the south, the Delaware River twists its way through the Gap in the Kittantinny Mountains. A series of overlooks along the PA Rt 611 provide bird's-eye views of the Gap and the river below. Mountain trails to Mount Tammany (NJ) and Mount Minsi (PA) provide incredible views of the Gap as well.
Once a prime resort area during the 19th
century, the Delaware Water Gap NRA park was established to preserve this unique valley in 1965. Taking in 67,000 acres, the parkland follows a narrow swath of land bordering each side of the river. The park not only incorporates New Jersey and Pennsylvania bottomlands, mountain ridges and forest ecosystems, but offers a unique collection of vernacular buildings. Under the care of the Park Service, different styles of architecture are represented in these buildings from the 18th and 19th century.
One of the cleanest and most scenic rivers in the northeast, visitors take advantage of this recreation area with canoeing, tubing, fishing, boating and swimming. The park offers over 200 miles of scenic roads and 100 miles of hiking trails which lead to camping sites, wildlife viewing, overlooks, trails and the park's waterfall sites.
