Anchoring the eastern end of Indiana's Heritage Trail, Shipshewana is one of seven main towns in Amish country. Known for their productive farms, craftsmanship, plain clothing, tasty dishes, and handmade quilts, the Amish people are most recognized for their avoidance of modern technology. Shunning electricity and power equipment, Amish walk a fine line between selling their goods and a desire as not to be seen as a tourist attraction.
Here in LaGrange County, Amish make up over a third of the population. Countryside tours, farmer's markets, and festivals bring in crowds of sightseers and shoppers. Shipshewana's main streets are lined with outlets, craft shops, bed and breakfast lodging, and restaurants. The Blue Gate Restaurant, located in the heart of town, is one of the area's most famous eateries. Opened in 1986, the restaurant quickly outgrew its 50 seat establishment. Its great Amish-style food and exemplary service sometimes create waits of up to two hours. Now the cornerstone of Shipshewana, the new restaurant seats 750 people. Its family style dining still features traditional country standards, plus homemade breads and 25 different kinds of pie.
Here in Elkhart and LaGrange counties, visitors will find plenty of interesting shops, picturesque farms, and historic homes ... while often reminded to watch out for slow-moving buggies.
