Oregon's Route 138, from Roseburg to Diamond Lake, covers another one of the state's splendid scenic byways. The highway follows the Umpqua River eastward through the heart of Umpqua Valley and Oregon's Wine Country. The highway then climbs through the foothills of the Cascades toward Crater Lake National Park. Here, the North Umpqua River begins to put on more of a show. Riffles turn into cascades, and a string of breathtaking waterfalls beg for your attention. Here among the river riffles and deep pools, steelheads, sturgeon, salmon and bass summon all anglers.
Following a similar route as its southern neighbor, the Rogue River, the North Umpqua begins at the crest of the Cascade Mountains. As the north and south branches gather momentum on their westerly journey, they join together near Roseburg and flow westward through the Coastal Range to the sea.
The North Umpqua, rising from Maidu Lake in the Thielsen Wilderness, will astound first time visitors with its clear emerald waters. Byway guests can experience a close up look at the wild and scenic river near Idleyld Park. Here the Umpqua gushes through The Narrows creating a gorgeous sight. Just off the highway, the small Douglas County Wayside Park features a picnic area and river access for fishing. It's a perfect overlook for a North Umpqua River introduction.
