Little state, big pond !
Delaware's Lums Pond State Park features the largest freshwater lake in the state. Just because it's entitled pond (as is common in the Northeast), you'll find this body of water really isn't pond size. Covering 200 acres, the lake provides a site for all water related activities, except swimming. Making it easy for a day on the water, sailboats, rowboats, canoes and kayaks are available for rent. The park personnel have gone the extra mile providing fields and courts for land recreation, including the more obscure sport of disc golf. The campground features 68 family sites, horse sites and two yurts.
Multi-use trails see activity most of the year, including hiking, biking and horseback riding. During the winter months, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling are popular.
The pond was created in the early 1800s by damming up Georges Creek. The lake water was used to fill the locks of Chesapeake and Delaware Canal. The lake quickly became a natural recreation area, and eventually achieved park status in 1963.
