Portuguese Beach - Bodega Bay, California
Photos by Meri Cheatham

This scene along Pacific Coast Highway 1 captures a beautiful seascape of Portuguese Beach. Like most beaches along the Sonoma Coastline, the area is not recommended for swimming. Strong rip currents, heavy surf and ground swells have created a wonderful coastline, but a dangerous one as well. But, the coastal beauty of this area is a big drawing card, and tourism is one of the top industries in California.
With its rugged headlands, towering sea stacks, coastal caves and sea arches, St Teresa of Avila - Bodega Bay, California the beauty of this seaside highway attracts millions of visitors every year. Stretching out along the Pacific Ocean for over 50 miles, the Sonoma Coast is also known for its wineries, redwood forests, charming seaside towns and waterfront restaurants. The cold water doesn't stop those who like to paddle or tackle the surf. Water related recreation draws in both locals and visitors alike who enjoy the natural beauty of the coast from an ocean viewpoint. Wine surfing is another way to enjoy seaside offerings without having to get wet ... other than your lips.
If the season is right, you must not leave the area without stopping along the headlands to do a little whale watching. The spring migration of whales runs from January through May, but these mammoth creatures are visible during much of the year. Spotting a whale family cruising by may be the highlight of a Portuguese Beach visit.
