Delaware's delegates were first to ratify the United States Constitution, signing the document at the Golden Fleece Tavern on The Green. In 1787 Delaware became the "First State” and is very proud of this momentous event. Here, at the First State Heritage Park in Dover, visitors are invited to discover the state's historic landmarks, homes, museums, businesses and government buildings around the town square. Options include a walking tour, a spooky lantern-lit tour or a riding tour aboard an authentic Stanley Steamer.
Enjoying its status as the capital city since 1777, Dover offers visitors an in-depth look at both state capitol buildings. The Old State House, originally commissioned as the Kent County Courthouse, was completed in 1791. Both county and state officials shared the building until 1873, when the Kent County government was relocated. The Old State House (inset) has been restored to its 18th century appearance and now doubles as a museum. Across The Green from the Old State House you'll easily spot Legislative Hall. Designed and built in the Colonial Revival style during the Great Depression era, construction was completed in 1933.
Holding the Delaware House of Representatives and Senate, plus the General Assembly's staff, the Hall has been expanded and refurbished several times over the years. Legislative Hall also houses the Hall of Governors, including portraits of all Delaware's governors. Many political and military figures are also honored in the Hall.
