An earthen dam, spanning a little over a mile across the Blue River, has created this beautiful reflective scene on the Dillon Reservoir. Lake Dillon, doubling as a recreation area in Colorado's Summit County, is placed in quite a scenic setting. Although the surrounding Rocky Mountains are known as a winter playground and for a famous cluster of winter resorts, the lake area is also a prime location for camping, boating and fishing. For the backcountry adventurer, the Lake Dillon area also ties in to a 50 mile trail system.
Looking back to the early 60s, the town of Dillon becme the focus of the Dillon Reservoir story. Before construction of the dam, the entire town required relocation, including its cemetery. It's easy to guess there was a town full of angry residents, very unhappy about the upcoming changes. It's hard to imagine today, but the old town footprint lies under 82 billion gallons of Blue River water.
