Spread over two counties and divided into four separate sections, Gunpowder Falls State Park was designed to protect the Big and Little Gunpowder Falls (rivers) and the Gunpowder River. Located nearby Baltimore, I-95 and I-83 provide easy access to these parklands. Taking in over 18,000 acres of coastal plain, tidal marshes and wetlands, newcomers may be slightly disappointed when expecting to see waterfalls. This view shows the small ripples on the Little Gunpowder River near Jerusalem Mill Village as it flows toward the Chesapeake Bay. The term falls simply implies a transition from the Piedmont Plateau to the Atlantic Coastal Plain. Although when the river is flowing at full strength, a Class III run allows kayakers and canoeists days of whitewater fun.
Offering miles of excellent trout streams, over 100 miles of hiking trails, a swimming beach at Chase and a marina on a Chesapeake inlet, Gunpowder Falls State Park attracts Baltimore residents with plenty of options for outdoor recreation. For those history buffs, the historic Jerusalem Mill Village features an 18th century grist mill, blacksmith shop and the 1865 Jericho Covered Bridge. The Friends of Jerusalem Mill have made great strides since 1985, restoring area structures and returning these historic buildings to their former glory.
