Palisades Park, a Blount County park in Alabama, takes in a small, but scenic slice of Ebell Mountain. This northern Alabama countryside falls within the dwindling influences of the southern Appalachians. Here in the northern zone of the state, Blount County's Appalachian Mountains have been reduced to foothills. The centerpiece of the park, a prominent palisade thought to be over 200 million years old, is a quarter mile bluff made up of limestone and sandstone.
The 100 acre park, established in 1973, is most popular with rock climbers, nature lovers and sightseers. Its 75 foot high cliff-line offers 90
climbing routes rated from easy (5.4) to difficult (5.12).
Palisades Park, nearby Oneonta, is an easy drive from the city of Birmingham. Although noted for its rock climbing venue, the park offers a close-up look into a 1820s pioneer village, as well as picnic areas, three rustic indoor lodges, six outdoor pavilions and eight
nature trails. The scenic overview at Meditation Point looks out over a splendid valley landscape for visitors that just want to relax and enjoy the view. Although the park is compact, it's big on scenery and climbing adventures.
