Still referred to as the
Hooper Strait Lighthouse, this beacon was moved about 45 miles north of the strait and now lights up the grounds of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in Saint Michaels. Another historic building slated for demolition was saved in 1996 with some savvy negotiations by the folks at the Maritime Museum.
This typical Chesapeake Bay style lighthouse, which rests on a series of screw-jacks, has been relocated on the Miles River. One of museum's major attractions, the lighthouse is open for public tours. Here on the museum grounds, the lighthouse continues to cast its warm glow just as it had 85 years ago. Replacing a lightship, the beacon created a wonderful greeting for weary fisherman returning from the Chesapeake Bay. The museum invites all to hear the tales of the Chesapeake watermen and take in, first-hand, the heritage and culture of the Bay.
Named as one of the top 10 Best Small Coastal Towns in America, Saint Michaels greets visitors with a picturesque harbor and some original homes which date all the way back to the late 1700s. Here a twinkling line of lights illuminate the harbor, creating this wonderful evening scene on the Eastern Shore.
