Located on southwestern edge of Texas Hill Country, many park-goers come to the South Llano River State Park to enjoy camping, hiking, biking, geocaching, and spotting wildlife. Sometimes called the Refuge on the River, summer beckons those who like to swim, float, paddle and fish. Labled as an International Dark Sky Park, stargazing is excellent here, far away from the glow of city lights.
When other Hill Country rivers are slowed to a trickle, the spring-fed South Llano River remains a great place for family water fun. Geared toward tubing on the slow moving river, the park setup multiple put-in and take-out points along the two miles of river frontage. For those who come without tubes, the park offers them for rent. For river paddlers there is one designated put-in site. Canoe and kayak rentals, along with shuttle services, are available locally.
Biking and hiking aficionados may access 17 miles of trails, ranging from easy to difficult. Some trails cross river bottoms, climb steep ridges and offer sections of wooded areas to cool off during the summer months. Opened in 1990, the park is a great place to escape from hubbub of the city and get back to nature in the Texas Hill Country.
