Set aside as a state park in 1864, Yosemite went on to become one of America's best known national parks. The majestic waterfalls, enormous rock monoliths, and the grandeur of Yosemite Valley have entertained park-goers for over a century. Covering nearly 1200 square miles, only a slight fraction of the park sees a regular stream of visitors. While most visitors flock to Yosemite Valley, another busy gem near the southern entrance is the Mariposa Grove. Here the giant sequoia trees enthrall sightseers with their tremendous girth and height. Some weighing over 600 tons and exceeding 3000 years old, the Mariposa Grove allows visitors to walk among 500 of largest sequoias in Yosemite.
The Mariposa Grove has re-opened after a large-scale restoration project, improving the giant sequoia habitat and addressing the declining conditions of the grove. The Mariposa Grove is now accessed by shuttle bus or over a two mile trail. A limited number of handicapped parking spaces are available near the shuttle dropoff. A wheelchair accessible paved pathway, a little over a mile long, leads to the Grizzly Giant and the California Tunnel Tree. The Grizzly Giant Loop Trail is a great way to return to the Grove Arrival Area.
A timed entry reservation is required to drive into Yosemite National Park during peak hours (6 am – 4 pm) from May 20 through September 30.
