The Mountain State

West Virginia’s early history was shared with neighboring Virginia. Opposing Virginia’s secession from the Union, West Virginia was granted statehood in 1863. The state’s mineral assets (especially coal) would shape West Virginia’s history over the next hundred years.
Living up to its slogan, West Virginia’s increase in tourism has significantly aided the state’s economy. With plenty of of wild and wonderful, the state's nine million acres of forestland and dozens of parks have become America’s outdoor playground. Divided into nine different travel regions, the state offers a diverse menu of cultural sites, Appalachian crafts, spectacular scenic wonders and genuine hospitality. From wild to mild, from five-star resorts to rustic retreats, West Virginia truly has something for everyone.
