The Lone Star State

Stretching out for almost 800 miles from north to south and over 650 miles wide, Texas is easily America's largest state in the Lower 49. The Texas spirit, the sense of pride, and independent attitude is evident in its state flag and motto, the Lone Star State. Its modern history began with Spanish exploration, and its Spanish roots are deeply woven throughout its culture today.
Known for its a varied terrain, the gigantic state is covered in a wonderland of natural landscapes. These regions, starting at the Gulf Coast, gradually begin to change in the Hill Country. Further to the west and southwest the rolling hills and high plains give way to the Pecos, Chisos, Guadalupe, and Davis mountains, which dominate the landscape. The National Park Service manages 14 units in Texas including two national parks. And it's no surprise that the state would also feature more than 90 state parks and nine state scenic byways.
