The Centennial State
By the time Zebulon Pike discovered Colorado's Pike Peak in 1806, Mesa Verde's cliff dwellers and hundreds of other Ancestral Puebloan tribes had already vanished. America's first World Heritage Site tells the story of this ancient civilization and their mysterious disappearance.
Colorado, the Centennial State, joined the Union when America turned 100. Sometimes called the Switzerland of America, the state is best known for its majestic Rocky Mountains. Not as well known as its 14,000 foot peaks, Colorado is home a wonderful collection of record setters, including the highest suspension bridge and sand dunes in the world, as well as the highest auto tunnel and paved road. The state capital, Denver, has the largest city park system and Colorado's Leadville is the highest city in elevation. Colorado's 23 scenic and historic byways are the best way to take in this four season wonderland and all its firsts.
