Whether you’re enjoying a relaxing ride through West Virginia’s scenic byways, joining in a fall festival, or climbing through miles of wilderness land, you’ll find plenty of fresh horizons in the Mountain State. This view from Tucker Overlook was found along U.S Route 219 in Tucker County, a roadway that follows the Allegheny Mountains. Its distant fall colors, appearing as a work in pastels, are set off by a rugged fence line lined with thistles and wildflowers. Here along the Seneca Trail, it’s hard not to stop and take in these views of endless mountains.
The Seneca Trail, or Warrior’s Path, was once the main artery of America’s Native Indians. Before the continent saw its first Europeans, the Native American highway followed the Appalachian Mountains from Upper New York to Georgia. Today, this beautiful section of the state is home to Blackwater Falls State Park, Canaan Mountain Backcountry, Dolly Sods Wilderness and Scenic Area, and the Otter Creek Wilderness. Tucker County makes the most of this wild and wonderful scenery with its annual Leaf Peepers Festival.
