Hoping to transform Midtown Manhattan from the seedy speakeasy belt to a respected business district, John D. Rockefeller Jr. made his boldest move during one of the worst economic periods of American history. At the time when Wall Street experienced its famous Black Thursday, Rockefeller held a huge lease on the Manhattan Property. Ignoring the country's severe economic crisis, Rockefeller and ally, the Radio Corporation of America, invested in one of New York City's most lasting icons, Rockefeller Center. Rockefeller Center- Let It Snow The 22 acre National Historic Landmark, housing a complex of impressive commercial buildings, has been the site of the city's annual holiday celebration and the lighting of the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree for the last 80 years.
At the time when the country's mood was at its lowest depths, RCA's RKO Studios provided a welcome diversion with a string of popular motion pictures. Here at the center, RCA developed an entertainment venue unlike the world had ever seen. Still one of the largest indoor theaters in the world, the Radio Music Hall features stage shows, movies and live concerts. Under its famous marquee that stretches across a whole city block, the Christmas tree, the huge holiday crowds and the Radio City Christmas spectacular continue in this cherished holiday tradition. The Christmas show still includes the famous Parade of the Wooden Soldiers, the Living Nativity and the incredible, eye-high kicking Rockettes.
