Hoping to transform Midtown Manhattan from the seedy speakeasy belt to a respected business district, John D. Rockefeller Jr. made his boldest move during one of the worst economic periods of American history. At the time when Wall Street experienced its famous Black Thursday, Rockefeller held a huge lease on the Manhattan Property. Ignoring the country's severe economic crisis, Rockefeller and ally, the Radio Corporation of America, invested in one of New York City's most lasting icons, Rockefeller Center. The 22 acre National Historic Landmark, housing a complex of impressive commercial buildings, has been the site of the city's annual holiday celebration and the lighting of the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree for the last 80 years.
