The Thompson Lakes consist of three separate and distinct lakes, with the Upper, Middle and Lower found nearby Montana's Route 2, about mid-way between Kalispell and Libby. Pictured here is Upper Thompson Lake, where its still waters catch a wonderful reflection of the Salish Mountains. The Thompson trio are part of the Thompson Chain, a series of 18 lakes that cover almost 3,000 acres, stretching out for over 20 miles in northwest Montana.
These popular lakes are easily accessed, either from a boat or the bank. Catches of Kokanee salmon, northern pike, perch, a variety of trout and bass attract anglers from all over. Lakes lying adjacent the highway receive additional fishing pressure. Other lakes on the chain provide nearby primitive camping sites, an excellent way to get away from the beaten track and have the lake to yourself.
Paved boat ramps, fishing outfitters and guides, overnight primitive camping and 22 campsites at Logan State Park (located on Middle Thompson Lake), provide an excellent opportunity to enjoy the state's Western Fishing District. Here, Montana's picture-perfect beauty, the challenge of fishing and just plain old lakeside relaxin' make this chain of lakes an ideal destination.
