Buford's Broken Dream

Buford Farm

Photos by Ben Prepelka

The sounds of this Buford farmland have quieted, except for the occasional passerby or buzz of the grasshopper moving from one stalk to the next. One may never understand these abandoned dreams, but it does nothing to stop the wonder and speculation. This sight, repeated throughout the Great Plains, requires a second look. Nostalgic feelings hang in the air surrounding an abandoned property. Questions abound. What's left inside? Does the family still live about, or long since moved away? Lost ambition? Perhaps too many years of drought. Farm living may have been too tough on a marriage. Buford Farm House
This scene was found along a section of North Dakota's Lewis and Clark Trail. Nearby Williston, history buffs will find Fort Buford, the Missouri-Yellowstone Confluence Interpretive Center and the Fort Union NHS. Exhibits at the Missouri-Yellowstone Confluence Interpretive Center describe the geography of these two mighty rivers. Along with the Lewis and Clark Expedition, the 2,000-square-foot gallery exhibits the fur trade era, modern-day irrigation methods, and transportation history of the Missouri and Yellowstone rivers.
Please respect private property. At times curiosity is a strong natural emotion, but a relying on one's imagination is the better choice.
