Loys Station Bridge

Loys Station Bridge

Photos by Ben Prepelka

Fires, progress and floods have claimed all but eight of Maryland's covered bridges. At one time as many as 52 wooden covered bridges graced the countryside.
This single lane bridge at Loys Station has been rescued from an arson fire and kindly rebuilt, reusing some of the original beams and other salvaged material. The bridge employs a multiple King Post truss system and some of the charring is still visible. Loys Station Bridge is one of three bridges in the Thurmont area, all displaying a different truss design.
A small community park lies adjacent to the bridge and includes a playground, picnic area and access to Owens Creek. The bridge remains as the focal point of the park, thanks to the efforts of the community and the Covered Bridge Preservation Society.
