Summit County, Colorado, is widely known for its winter ski resorts. This winter sports mecca is easily reached from Interstate 70 and is lies just west of Denver. Breckenridge Ski Area was built in 1962, quickly followed by Keystone, Copper Mountain and Arapahoe.
Although the area's big draw is snow sports, the Dillon and Green River reservoirs are also excellent places for summer fun. Hiking, mountain biking, fishing, boating, water skiing and wind surfing fill the hours of Summit County visitors. This area is surrounded by four national forests, San Isabel, Pike, Arapahoe and White River. Spread throughout the White Forest district are eight remote wilderness areas. Backcountry hikers come away with a growing admiration for the beauty of this mountainous country and also a sense of desire to retain this pristine area for all future generations.
