Straitsmouth Island

Straitsmouth Island Lighthouse

Photos by Ben Prepelka

Cape Ann juts out into the Atlantic Ocean, marking the northern boundary of Massachusetts Bay. Out on the tip of the cape, along the shoreline, are a few well Straitsmouth Island Lighthouseknown Massachusetts towns, Gloucester, Rockport and Pigeon Cove. This view looks northward toward Rockport and Straitsmouth Island. The Rockport settlement dates to the early 1620s, primarily a fishing village and small port, set up for timber exports. Rockport's fine granite became its leading product in the early 1800s, shipping stone throughout the eastern United States.
Rockport's navigational aid was established in 1825, with the present day Straitsmouth Island Lighthouse built in 1896. The 37 foot brick tower remains an active beacon managed by the U.S. Coast Guard. The island property is owned by the Massachusetts Audubon Society, protecting its native bird populations.
