Cape Ann juts out into the Atlantic Ocean, marking the northern boundary of Massachusetts Bay. Out on the tip of the cape, along the shoreline, are a few well known Massachusetts towns, Gloucester, Rockport and Pigeon Cove. This view looks northward toward Rockport and Straitsmouth Island. The Rockport settlement dates to the early 1620s, primarily a fishing village and small port, set up for timber exports. Rockport's fine granite became its leading product in the early 1800s, shipping stone throughout the eastern United States.
