The Chase State Fishing Lake and Wildlife Area, just a little over a mile from the town of Cottonwood Falls, takes in almost 400 acres of Chase County's wild country. Offering an opportunity for hunting and fishing, the refuge is centered on a 100 acre lake. Located in the famous Flint Hills, Chase Lake puts anglers onto plenty of channel cats, black bass, saugeye, crappie and white bass. Limited hunting is allowed, with mostly grassland game birds, rabbit and white-tailed deer taken.
   When sightseers pass through the vast stretches of the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve and explore its historic buildings, it's a given that waterfalls are not on their mind. But, after seeing the town of Cottonwood Falls, one may pick up a subtle hint that area waterfalls may be worth asking about. Striking up a conversation with the right person in town may offer a little treat. From town, a quick drive out to Chase State Fishing Lake and a short walk across the earthen dam to the spillway leads to the 40 foot Chase Lake Falls. Depending on area rainfall, this run from the spillway drops several hundred feet on its way to the Cottonwood River. Cascades and waterfalls in this area are somewhat of a rarity and this one makes up a pleasant little side trip from the Flint Hills Scenic Byway.
