Historic Mill Creek State Park marks one of the first industrial sites in the Great Lakes Region. History buffs, hiking enthusiasts and photographers enjoy this 625 acre park, be it hiking on the nature trails, watching a living history demonstration or investigating the old saw mill, pictured here. Visitors are also treated to the Millwright House's Mill WoodpileExhibit, a reconstruction of an original house occupied by the millwright in the 1820s. Demonstrations include a replication of the mill's saw cutting logs just like it was done so many years ago.
During the 1790s, the mill began providing lumber for the settlement of Mackinac Island . The water-powered sawmill remained in operation for 40 years and eventually disappeared from sight. Archaeologists finally unearthed the site in 1972. Years later, an authentic replica was built.
Michigan's Mackinac State Historic Parks inventory include Fort Mackinac, Mackinac Island State Park, Historic Downtown on Mackinac Island, Colonial Michilimackinac, Historic Mill Creek, and Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse in Mackinaw City.
