Mississippi Delta Farmland

Mississippi Delta Farmland - Louisiana

The words Mississippi Delta and the Deep South go hand-in-hand. Here along the Mississippi River is the flattest looking land one could imagine, only broken by the occasional tree line. The southern states, especially Louisiana and Mississippi, are home for agriculture, and of course the Delta Blues. Agriculture has been the mainstay of the Delta's economy, with crops of sugar, tobacco, rice and cotton.
In this sprawling Delta farmland view near Transylvania, the crop rows seem to be laid out with a surveyor's transit. With the coming of spring this new crop has just sprouted from the red Mississippi clay. The delta land was once rich with sediment carried downstream by the mighty Mississippi River and spread with springtime flood waters. Levees and dams control the river today and flooding is a rare occurrence.
