At Artist's Point springtime snowmelt floods the Yellowstone River which rips through Yellowstone's Grand Canyon and over both major waterfalls in Yellowstone National Park. Here at Canyon Village, the Upper and Lower Falls of the Yellowstone are some of the most popular photographic subjects in Yellowstone National Park. Upper Yellowstone Falls and Chittenden Memorial Bridge- Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming
One of two major falls on the Yellowstone River, the Lower Falls is among the top ten waterfall settings in the United States. Although the falls is just 308 feet tall, canyon depths range from 800 to 1200 feet. Seen from Lookout Point, Red Rock Point, Artist Point and from various locations on the North Rim and South Rim trails, the canyon frequently takes on the appearance of a watercolor painting. Here, the yellow canyon walls are quite evident, getting their color from the iron casts within. Most of the yellows in the canyon are the result of iron oxidizing in the rock rather than sulfur, as many people think.
Along the canyon's north and south rims are offer a half dozen vantage points and overlooks. Five trails and a paved drive on both north and south rims lead to many of the canyon's splendid views. Some of the trails lead visitors to close-up views of the falls, where visitors may experience the tremendous power of the Yellowstone River.
