Little Muskingum River

Little Muskingum River

This view shows the Little Muskingum River living up to its name. Native Americans referred to this Ohio tributary as the muddy river for centuries. During the late 1800s, bridge builders kept busy along the Muskingum. Today's sightseers are well rewarded on the Covered Bridge Scenic Byway.
Canoeing on the Little Muskingum makes for an excellent day trip, with gentle class I waters. The Wayne National Forest Service has established campgrounds and launch sites along the river banks. The Ring Mill access is the first upstream site, and with ample water, the trip southward can be a fun experience. Springtime brings out the budding trees, and the dogwood and redbud brighten the Little Muskingum Banks. During the fall, maple, beech and oak put on a spectacular show. Whether by car or canoe, this scenic byway can keep one busy for the day.
