The Discovery

The Discovery

The Discovery, a 17th century cargo vessel, made six expeditions to the New World in search of the elusive Northwest Passage. In 1607, the most famous trip brought settlers to the new colony of Jamestown, Virginia, thirteen years before the Pilgrims landed in Massachusetts. The 50 foot ship had a crew of nine and carried only twelve passengers, mainly ferrying supplies to the colony.
The Jamestown Settlement Living History Museum made plans to replace the replica ships, Godspeed and Discovery. The small cargo ships, described as the pickup trucks of the day, were built from plans and hundreds of illustrations of period vessels as no original blueprints for the Jamestown ships exist. The new Godspeed, set on a 47 foot keel, was built in Rockport, Maine. The Discovery was launched from Boothbay Harbor in September 2006, just in time for Sail Virginia 2007 and Jamestown's 400 year anniversary celebration.
