This late afternoon view captures one of West Virginia's largest lakes bathed in long shadows, surrounded by a thick forest and mountainous terrain. The 2,000 acre Bluestone Lake is the centerpiece of this wilderness park and the destination for all imaginable water activities.
The Bluestone State Park, located in Summers County near Harris, was created by damming up the New River. Here in the park, the New River is joined by the Wild and Scenic Bluestone River, acquiring this national designation in 1988.
The entire area is focused on recreation and parklands, including the adjacent Bluestone Lake Wildlife Management Area, Pipestem Resort, Sandstone Falls, Winterplace Ski Resort, Grandview Park and the New River Gorge National River. The Bluestone State Park is also packed with amenities and accommodations. Guest may choose from a cluster of fully furnished modern cabins or a trip to the other extreme, a primitive campsite on the east shore, accessed only by boat. Special weekly program are featured throughout the summer, focused on family fun and entertainment.
