Helton Creek Lower Falls    Much different from the gentle rolling plains to the south, northern Georgia topography quickly turns to heavily forested mountain ridges and valleys of the southern Appalachians. Here among Georgia's highest peaks of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Russell Brasstown Scenic Byway loops through the beautiful Chattahoochee National Forest. Giving rise to countless mountain streams, broad mountaintop vistas and the starting point of the Great Appalachian Trail, this section of Georgia is quite the outdoor Helton Creek Upper Falls lover's paradise.
State parks, national forestland trails and this land of a thousand waterfalls offer a variety of outdoor recreational ideas and destinations. One of the area's lesser known waterfall settings is just about a mile south of Vogel State Park and Blood Mountain. Easy access to a short hiking path lead down to Helton Creek, where summer visitors may cool off from the Georgia heat. Short trails lined with rhododendron lead to upper and lower falls. Here, Helton Creek cascades nearly 90 feet down the rocky slopes into natural pools. A perfect play area for children, be sure to put this stop on your list when you’re in the Brasstown Bald area.
