North Florida’s Maclay Gardens State Park is well known as a masterpiece of floral architecture, decked out with hundreds of camellias, magnolias and azaleas. The gardens were once part of the Alfred B. Maclay estate. Its 307 acres, including the private gardens, were donated to the state in 1953.
Today, the gardens are still a big part of the Maclay Gardens Recreation Area. The park also welcomes its guests to enjoy Lake Hall, caught here in this colorful reflective scene. The lake area is a big part of summer fun, where activities include swimming, fishing, canoeing, kayaking and picnicking. Lake Hall’s shoreline is shared with private residences, restricting boats to quiet electric motors. Freshwater species of largemouth bass, bluegill, warmouth and crappie call to the local anglers. Two nature trails, the Boy Scout and Big Pine, weave throughout an upland forest, and introduce hikers to area wildlife that include white tail deer, bobcat, and variety of birds.
Although the rec area is quite popular, the gardens remain the mainstay of the park. Springtime blooms bring in the crowds, with guided tours offered on weekends. The park's MP3 audio tour is available for those wanting to discover the gardens on their own.
