   Selected to portray North Carolina's beauty and cultural heritage, 60 scenic byways are spread throughout the Tar Heel State. Varying from the coastal regions, and throughout the fertile Piedmont to the breathtaking scenery of the Blue Ridge Mountains, byway travelers will enjoy a slower paced alternative to the state's interstate highways.
   Winding 100 miles across North Carolina’s westernmost counties, the Waterfall Scenic Byway earns its name from 200 waterfalls that surround the region. From Rosman, the byway follows U.S. 64 through the rugged and very scenic Blue Ridge Mountains on its way to Murphy. Along the way, travelers will easily spot many of the state's picturesque waterfalls. The byway also passes through somne of the oldest resort communities in the Highlands area.    For those looking to enjoy a relaxing winter recreation will find Sapphire Valley a perfect setting for a family ski vacation. Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, this resort offers southerners the closest opportunity for a winter mountain getaway. Just a three hour drive from the Atlanta area, Sapphire Valley Resort guests will find a state-of-the art quad lift and a 1600 foot main run, providing an ideal location for skiers of all skill levels. The perfect atmosphere for beginners, the resort offers on-the-mountain guidance from professional instructors. The resort also offers hours of family fun on a 700 foot snow-tubing run. Hungry? No problem at all. The Four Seasons Grill is located at the base of the slope, offering up everything from snacks to dinner entrees.
