Hurricane River

Hurricane River

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, better known for its colorful, sandstone bluffs, also features miles of unspoiled sandy shores at Twelvemile Beach and Grand Sable Dunes. Pictured here is the fast flowing Hurricane River as it flows out of Michigan's Kingston Plains and spills onto the eastern end of Twelvemile Beach.
The park offers some of the area's best hikes, ranging from the easy to the vigorous. Trails parallel the Lake Superior shoreline, and alongside inland rivers and waterfalls. Nearby the Hurricane River site, access to the North Country Trail is found and leads to some of the park's eastern features, the Grand Sable Dunes, the Log Slide and the vintage 1874 Au Sable Light Station. These popular attractions are found nearby the Grand Sable Visitor Center.
The 45 mile long national park offers three campgrounds at Beaver Lake, Twelvemile Beach and Hurricane River. The park service lists these as rustic; meaning there is no electricity, telephone, cell phone coverage, water or sewer. But there are 13 truly rustic campsites, setup for backcountry camping and are labeled as hike-in only campgrounds.
