Dotting the Texas Hill Country just east of Austin, Lone Star State residents are fortunate Pedernales River Cascades to have half dozen state parks at their fingertips. The area also features the LBJ Historic Site and plenty of winery tours to fill any weekend with something fun to do.
Pedernales Falls State Park is one of the most popular and dramatic parks of the area. Centered on the Pedernales River, powerful cascades drop 50 feet over a series of polished limestone ledges. Downriver, a beach area entices swimmers and waders, with Twin Falls - Pedernales Falls State Park, Texas some of the deep pools over six feet. Most of the time, the river flows along at a peaceful rate, but occasionally this Texas river will turn into a raging torrent. Flash flooding is commonplace in the Texas Hill Country, and park visitors are advised to keep tabs on weather conditions.
Taking in over 5200 acres, this parkland was once part of the Circle Bar Ranch. An old jeep road makes up part of Wolf Mountain Trail. The eight and a half mile trail and loop passes through mix scrub oak and juniper woodlands, and rises through a dense forest of walnut, elm, pecan and hackberry. The hike leads to a primitive campground, stunning overhead views of the Pedernales River Valley, passed some old remnant buildings of the Circle Bar Ranch and a few beautiful waterfall sites at Jones Spring and Twin Falls.
