Big Sky, a modest little town of about 1,300 people, is found along the Gallatin River in the shadows of the Madison Mountain Range, not far from Yellowstone National Park. Summer activities in the Big Sky area, that's surrounded by the Gallatin National Forest and Lee Metcalf Wilderness, Meriweather Lodgetake in Montana's great outdoors. Here you'll find the best in hiking and biking, fishing, rafting, climbing, and golf. Winter activities draw the hearty souls along miles of cross-country skiing trails. You may find ice skating, dog sledding, or snowshoeing more your style. Interests range from thrills on a backcountry snowcat to a leisurely evening sleigh-ride.
Here in Big Sky, wintertime excitement is found on the slopes. Moonlight Basin and Big Sky resorts are known for their large areas of skiing terrain and the country's longest vertical at 4350 feet. This Picture of the Day is a scene from Moonlight Basin's Meriweather Run, with Big Sky’s Lone Peak looming in the distance. Moonlight Basin not only offers a first-class lodge, but for the newcomers, its setting is most magnificent. It's Big Sky, living up to its name.
